Precision Marine

Precision Marine is a marine parts and distribution business serving customers across the marine industry. Their business depends on making a large, complex parts inventory discoverable and accessible to customers who need to identify and order the right component. Amplus Agency has been their retained web and digital partner since October 2021 (3+ years active).

Challenge

  1. Building a 25,000+ Page Catalog on WordPress Without Breaking the Platform — WordPress is not designed out of the box to host 25,000 pages of structured product data. At that scale, performance, database query loads, search indexing, and admin manageability become significant engineering challenges requiring deliberate architectural decisions made at the start — not retrofitted later.
  2. Organizing a Complex Parts Inventory Into a Searchable, Navigable Structure — A marine parts catalog isn't a simple product list. Each part has relationships to vessel types, engine models, system categories, manufacturer part numbers, and compatibility specifications. Building a taxonomy that lets customers navigate from a vessel type to a specific component — or search by part number — required deep understanding of how marine customers actually search.
  3. Maintaining Catalog Accuracy Across a Large and Evolving Inventory — Parts are discontinued, specs change, new products are added, and compatibility info is updated. Managing those changes across 25,000+ pages as an ongoing operational responsibility requires a management system that allows efficient, reliable updates without introducing errors or gaps.

Solution

Amplus approached this as a data architecture problem first, design problem second.

  • Architecture Before Pages — Defined the full data structure before building a single parts page: taxonomy for categories, custom fields for specifications/compatibility, URL and naming conventions, and relationship logic between parts and vessel/system categories. Getting this right upfront was critical since retrofitting a 25,000-page catalog is not realistic.
  • WordPress Engineered for Catalog Scale — Configured WordPress specifically for high-volume structured content queries, fast/accurate search indexing across the full catalog, and an admin interface allowing staff to manage routine updates without developer access.
  • Unified Platform: Website + Catalog as One — Built the public website and parts catalog as a single WordPress platform. Customers move seamlessly from company information into the catalog without a platform handoff — consistent design, navigation, and branding throughout.
  • Ongoing Catalog Management as a Retained Service — Continuous inventory management, platform performance monitoring, and development support for catalog expansions as the business evolves.
